Two people died in the crash a single-engine plane in Monroe County, Mississippi, officials said.

The pilot and plane owner was identified as Richard Justice, 73. His plane, a Mooney M20J, took off from Monroe County Airport on Tuesday morning, headed for Madison, Mississippi, and returned several minutes later. It crashed into a wooded area near the airport.

Sheriff Cecil Cantrell said the plane "must have had some problems." Kathleen Burgen, Federal Aviation Administration communications manager, said, the passenger aboard the plane was not identified. Officials found the plane's wreckage about one-half mile from the airport.

The FAA and National Transportation Safety Board were scheduled to travel to the scene Wednesday to begin an investigation.
