Bosch and TomTom introduce Radar Road Signature for automated driving

German supplier Bosch and Dutch map maker TomTom are developing a high-resolution mapping system using the supplier"s radar sensors.

Radar Road Signature

The technology, “Radar Road Signature”, is intended for use in self-driving cars, helping vehicles determine their location within centimeters.

Road data will be collected via the radar sensors in real time, which allows for greater range and detail than camera sensors. TomTom will integrate this data into its mapping system.

Bosch board member Dirk Hoheisel, said, cars arriving on the market in years to come with the assistance functions of tomorrow will be running the map for the automated vehicles of the future.

Bosch current sensors are used for driver assist systems, such as automatic emergency braking and adaptive cruise control are designed to detect moving objects.

The next generation of Bosch radar sensors will also detect static objects to provide the data for Radar Road Signature.

Bosch wants to launch the Radar Road Signature onto the market in Europe and the U.S. by 2020 at the latest.

According to Bosch, Radar Road Signature transmits half the volume of data required for the images. With 77 GHz long-range radar sensors detects range of up to 250 meters compared to a maximum range of 150 meters for camera and video sensors.

High-resolution maps are essential for automated driving and provide information that goes beyond the area that sensors are able to monitor.

TomTom CEO Harold Goddijn, said, we are delighted to be able to introduce supplemental localization data in the form of the Radar Road Signature in partnership with Bosch. It will make self-localization for automated vehicles considerably more robust in every respect.
