Apple plans to explore 3D face scanning technology in its next iPhone

According to rumors, Apple working on face recognizing technology that will unlock the iPhone using face instead of a fingerprint. The face recognizing technology can authenticate a user within a few hundred milliseconds. Also, the system capable of recognizing a person even if the iPhone not held in front of the user"s face.

The face recognizing technology is more secure than Touch ID, which enables Apple to ditch the fingerprint sensor entirely. In addition to unlocking and providing access to iPhones, iPads and new MacBook Pros, Touch ID also used authorize Apple Pay transactions.

The phone will use a 3D sensor that can scan people"s faces to ensure that they are who say they are. It might also include eye scanning technology to make the system doubly secure.

Analyst Ming-Chi Kuo, says, technical challenges have prevented Apple from embedding a fingerprint sensor into the screen. He did not suggest whether Apple would use facial recognition to replace Touch ID this year. If Apple moves the fingerprint sensor to the back of the device, as some leaks have suggested may happen.

Also, Apple testing dedicated chips for both AI processing and displays with higher frame rates. Apple introduced an advanced 120Hz Pro-Motion display with its latest iPad Pros. But, it"s unclear whether such capabilities will make it to the iPhone lineup as soon as this year.

The upcoming iPhone 8 is expected to feature a forward-facing 3D camera array that will allow for unique facial recognition capabilities that are expected to integrate with Apple"s AR Kit tools for augmented reality apps. The "iPhone 8" expected to boast a complete redesign of the handset with a 5.2-inch edge-to-edge OLED display minimal bezels. The device also expected to feature both fast charging via Lightning and contact-based wireless charging.
