The self-driving car project started by George Hotz, the first person to ever jailbreak the iPhone, has been canceled.

After being pressured by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) to delay selling its Comma One semi-autonomous driving kit, Comma.ai has cancelled the Tesla Autopilot-like system.

Comma.ai CEO George Hotz launched Comma One last month at TechCrunch Disrupt SF.  Comma.ai, which has raised $3m from venture firm Andreessen Horowitz, had planned to launch a system that would bring semi-autonomous features similar to Tesla’s Autopilot to certain Honda models by the end of the year.

In a series of tweets this morning, Comma.ai, the company that just last month promised semi-autonomous driving as a $999 aftermarket upgrade by the end of year, announced that it won’t release that product after all. Comma.ai will be “exploring other products and markets.”

However, Comma’s plans caught the attention of the US National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, which wrote to the start-up this week.

“We are concerned that your product would put the safety of your customers and other road users at risk,” NHTSA said, urging Comma to delay the launch for further testing. “There is a high likelihood that some drivers will use your product in a manner that exceeds its intended purpose.”

The Comma.ai site is still active, and at the bottom of the page displays a quote attributed to former Nokia CEO Stephen Elop and “car companies in 5 years.“
