General Motors and IBM today announced a partnership to bring the power of OnStar and IBM Watson together to create OnStar Go, the auto industry’s first cognitive mobility platform.

OnStar Go makes use of machine learning to analyze data gathered by the driver and use that to make informed decisions about potential product and service offerings from things in proximity to the car or within the car itself.

GM’s deployment of self-driving cars that can safely navigate city streets without human intervention will first happen in a controlled, ride-sharing environment.

OnStar is expected to give millions of GM drivers the ability to connect and interact with their favorite brands.

The system alert drivers who need fuel, identify a nearby pump, pre-activate the pump for use and let the driver pay directly from their dash, or it could allow for pre-order of a coffee for pickup from a drive-in window, or use your listening habits to create a personalized radio station.

GM Chief Executive Mary Barra said the goal is to optimize driving time by connecting drivers to the world outside their car. The system will use “the power of Watson to understand that consumer and make sure what we’re putting in front of them is timely and relevant,” she said.

“This is the first one of its kind, a pervasive platform that has to do with making your life more enjoyable, safe and convenient in your car,” said IBM CEO Ginni Rometty.

The new OnStar Go features are set to go live in vehicles from GM by the end of 2017.
