Qualcomm’s new Spectra Module camera program is set to arrive in the latest generation of Android handset. With few new key options are depth sensing and biometric authentication, letting users unlock their phones with an iris scan.

Apparently, the Spectra system gives manufacturers a different sort of camera functionality, with the recent growth of dual-lens cameras. Mostly, the second lens used to increase telephoto zoom or image quality via black and white sensor.

According to Qualcomm, the new module separates the two more exactly than on existing Android phones, which can have difficulty separating the two.

This system uses three camera modules, which includes IR illuminator and IR camera. The illuminator fires out a series of dots, detected by the camera, creating a complex depth map.



The new module also offers structured light components for computer vision applications, also offers photographic multi-frame noise reduction, hardware-accelerated motion compensated temporal filtering (MCTF), inline electronic image stabilization (EIS). The modules support simultaneous localization and mapping (SLAM) algorithms required in some VR and AR applications.



The Spectra module consist of three systems, an iris authentication module, a passive sensing module and an active sensing module designed for both mobile devices and head mounted displays (HMDs).

The Qualcomm Spectra family of image signal processors (ISPs) and new Qualcomm Spectra expected to arrive in the next Snapdragon Mobile and virtual reality (VR) platforms.
