Google, Amazon, IBM, Facebook and Microsoft are joining forces to create a "Partnership on Artificial Intelligence."

The goal of the organisation is to study and create best AI practices and also help the general crowd understand what AI is, and understand how it will influence people and society.

The Partnership on Artificial Intelligence to Benefit People and Society is being formed by Amazon, Facebook, Google, IBM, and Microsoft, each of which will have a representative on the group’s 10-member board. Interestingly Apple and Tesla’s Elon Musk are not part of this society.

According to their website 'Partnership on AI', the idea is to “advance the public’s understanding of AI, and to serve as an open platform for discussion and engagement about AI and its influences on people and society.”

“The power of AI is in the enterprise sector,” said Francesca Rossi, an AI ethics researcher at IBM Research. “For society at-large to get the benefits of AI, we first have to trust it.”

There will be equal representation between corporate and non-corporate members on the board of the partnership, and it hopes to invite “academics, non-profits and specialists in policy and ethics” to join.

The 'Partnership on AI’ will conduct research and recommend best practices relating to “ethics, fairness and inclusivity; transparency, privacy, and interoperability; collaboration between people and AI systems; and the trustworthiness, reliability and robustness of the technology,” according to the announcement. “It does not intend to lobby government or other policymaking bodies.”

“We believe that artificial intelligence technologies hold great promise for raising the quality of people’s lives and can be leveraged to help humanity address important global challenges such as climate change, food, inequality, health, and education,” the organization says on its homepage.
