Self-driving cars? We all almost got used to the idea, by now. Self-driving boats? Well, they could make sense, especially in places like Amsterdam. But self-driving chairs? It's a new concept developed by Nissan.
If this all sounds too familiar, it’s probably because you’ve seen it before…

Japanese manufacturer Nissan just unveiled the new “ProPILOT Chair”, which automatically detects and follows the chair ahead of it queuing on behalf of its occupant.
The prototype chair can move itself and stop before it collides with an obstacle. It was developed by the Japanese automaker and promoted via a YouTube video earlier this week. Though the chairs are only in the prototype stage, they already show a lot of promise for organizing queues and even helping those with limited mobility.
The chairs use technology originally designed for single-lane highway driving. They detect other chairs and follow a line in single-file. Embedded cameras detect the preceding chair… it can be applied to long queues, and even help to clean up, the company states.
The chairs are also programmed with "self-parking" technology. The self-propelling chair detects surrounding chairs and moves patrons through lines in a predefined path.
The system, which is similar to the kind used in Nissan's autonomous vehicle technology, will be tested at select restaurants in Japan this year, Nissan said.
Restaurants across Japan that want to test the chair are invited to apply before December 27, tweeting their name and webpage along with the hashtags #NissanProPilotChair #Wanted.
