A gunman remains at large after killing four women and wounding one man at a mall in Washington State, authorities said.
All those killed at the Cascade Mall in Burlington on night were inside Macy's department store, said Sgt. Mark Francis, a spokesman for the state patrol.
One man suffered critical injuries, and was hospitalized.
Authorities believe only one shooter was involved and are searching for a man who headed toward Interstate 5 after the attack.
A witness described chaotic scenes and confusion when the shooting started.
An officer "with a large gun started yelling for people to leave, and fast," she said.
Survivors were transported by bus to a nearby church.
Authorities warned people to stay indoors and avoid the mall area. Those who left their cars at the mall were told to check back the next day.
Cascade Mall still an active scene, the Skagit County emergency office tweeted. Stay alert. Call 911 if you see anything.
Officers using K-9 units searched the 434,000 square feet mall throughout the night, including in secure rooms, authorities said.
Authorities released a surveillance image of the suspect walking through the store and holding a rifle. Francis said police did not know the gunman's motive and could not say whether he targeted the victims. He said the ages of the victims appeared to range from their 20s to elderly, but had no further identifying information.
Washington Gov. Jay Inslee said in a statement that many questions remain but state patrol and local law enforcement are on the scene working swiftly to locate the shooter and clear the area.
Law enforcement looking for single shooter. Please remain inside. Stay alert. Call 911 if you see anything suspicious. #CascadeMallShooting

"Trudi and I send our condolences to the families of the victims and prayers for anyone injured," Inslee said. "We urge residents to heed all safety and detour warnings. Stay close to your friends and loved ones as we await more information and, hopefully, news of the suspect's capture."
The FBI's Seattle office announced that it was assisting local investigators with intelligence reviews and manpower. The bureau said on Twitter that it "has no information to suggest additional attacks planned" in Washington state but did not elaborate.
