Yahoo confirmed on Thursday that information associated with at least 500 million user accounts was stolen. From its network in 2014.
An investigation by Yahoo confirmed that a data breach in late 2014 may have included email addresses, names, date of birth and telephone numbers, and hashed passwords but may not have included unprotected passwords, payment card data or bank account information, the company said.
Yahoo urges users to change their password and security questions and to review their accounts for suspicious activity.
The FBI said it was aware of the intrusion and is investigating the matter but did not give any information about whether it had specific insight into who might have been behind the attack. Yahoo said it was working with law enforcement on the matter.
Verizon, which announced in July an agreement to buy Yahoo’s core internet properties for $4.83 billion, said in a statement it was made aware of the breach within the last two days and had limited information about the matter.
About 250 million use Yahoo Mail, while another 81 million use Yahoo Finance and tens of millions use Yahoo Fantasy Sports. No accounts on Yahoo-owned blogging site Tumblr should be affected.
A large-scale data breach was first rumored in August when a hacker who goes by the name of "Peace" claimed to be selling data from 200 million Yahoo users online. The same hacker has previously claimed to sell stolen accounts from LinkedIn (LNKD, Tech30) and MySpace.
