Google is planning to setup data centers in India by 2017, hoping to take on global incumbents such as Amazon and Microsoft, who have a presence in the country, and allow local customers to host their applications on the internet.
With more than a billion end users, Google controls a majority market share in India in search, email and on smartphones through is Android operating system.
Amazon has three data centers, one each in Mumbai, Delhi and Chennai, with over 75,000 customers, including taxi hailing app Ola, Tata Motors and television network NDTV, on its cloud. Last year, Microsoft set up three data centers in India offering its Azure cloud to local customers.
Brian Stevens, VP at Google Cloud, says, by expanding to new regions, we deliver higher performance to customers. In fact, our recent expansion in Oregon resulted in up to 80% improvement in latency for customers. We look forward to welcoming customers to our new Cloud Regions as they become publicly available throughout 2017.
Google, which already hosts applications of its Indian customers such as Ashok Leyland, Wipro, Dainik Bhaskar Group, Smartshift by Mahindra & Mahindra and INshorts.com on its global cloud platform, expects an India presence to service local customers faster. Google calls it data centre Cloud Region.
"We are seeing demand from various regions, including India. It is a pretty safe bet that in a country with a population of over a billion, there is great demand and opportunity," said Ursz Holzle, senior vice-president, technical infrastructure, Google.
Google also unveiled the G Suite which was previously called Google Apps for Work and encompasses enterprise apps such Gmail, Docs, Drive, Calendar, Hangouts, and more, which have been added with enhanced features with an aim to improve real-time collaboration between teams and employees.
The data center “Google Cloud Regions” will also be set up in other location including Singapore, Sydney, Northern Virginia, São Paulo, London, Finland and Frankfurt. The company also plans to set up ‘Cloud Regions’ in more geographical locations next year.
