The quake struck 143 km west of the city of Meiktila at a depth of 84 km.  6.8 magnitude earthquake has hit central Myanmar, and was felt as far away as Thailand, Bangladesh and India.

National Centre for Seismology, a unit of Ministry of Earth Sciences, the epicenter of the quake was in Myanmar and it occurred at 4:04 PM at a depth of 58 kms.

 People panicked and fled out of buildings in Kolkata, Patna and Guwahati.

No casualties or damage have yet been reported.

Tremors were felt in parts of West Bengal, Jharkhand, Bihar and Assam.

 Metro services were briefly stopped in Kolkata after tremors were felt in the West Bengal capital. Many offices too were closed.

Shaking buildings across the country and the region. Office buildings in the Thai capital of Bangkok, to the east of Myanmar, shook for a few seconds.

The quake was also felt in Bangladesh, to the west of Myanmar.
