Alexa, the popular voice assistant from Amazon is already quite popular and used for ordering pizza or for calling Uber but now she is going to be more useful and helpful in kitchen also as GE has added this voice assistant to its appliances.
Credit goes to engineers at GE who have trained Alexa to preheat oven, set cook timer and alert you about your laundry and so on – all with the help of voice recognition suite of appliances that is under Alexa’s control now.
“Voice is something that’s been on our radar for quite a long time, because we saw the value of having an extra hand in the kitchen. For instance, Alexa lets you change the temperature on the oven even if you've got your hands full. You can also check on the dryer without walking down to the laundry room, or tell the fridge to cool down while you're filling it with groceries,” Bill Gardner, Program Manager for Alexa Integration at GE Appliances mentioned.
Alexa has capacity to control over 70 connected GE appliances. It all works on Wi-Fi connectivity that has been built into a wide range of GE appliances like ovens, refrigerators, washers, dryers, dishwashers, and water heaters etc. and available on counters. The set of tasks that Alexa is capable of completing is referred as “skill” by Amazon and the skill is named Geneva. Alexa mingles up with Geneva very well.
“Because we had infrastructure and an ecosystem, we came up with the capability very rapidly,” Gardner added. His team took only few months to develop Geneva.
To make it happen your appliances have to be connected to Wi-Fi and an Alexa compatible device like Amazon Echo, Dot or any third party device is needed.
