Doctors in Canada can now prescribe heroin to patients with particularly serious addictions to the drug.
Controlled Drugs and Substances Act permits Canada doctors to apply for permission under the federal Special Access to offer medical-grade heroin to their addicted patients. The drug, known medically as diacetylmorphine, can be prescribed only to patients with severe heroin addictions who have tried to end their addiction multiple times with other methods but have failed, the government said.
In October 2013 Rona Ambrose, the Health Minister of Canada removed diacetylmorphine from the federal Special Access Program and so banned doctors' access to prescribe Heroin.
The new law clarifies that heroin can be prescribed to patients only under supervision in specialized circumstances, said Oviedo-Joekes
Oviedo-Joekes led the North American Opiate Medication Initiative, an experimental drug trial evaluating the feasibility and effectiveness of heroin-assisted treatment in a Canadian context.
A number of studies have shown that treatment with diacetylmorphine can help addicted patients who've previously failed other treatments. "Having access to diacetylmorphine will provide health practitioners with an additional treatment option to treat patients with opioid dependence who have not responded to traditional treatments," the new regulations said.
According to the new regulations Patients who get prescriptions for heroin will be supervised by medical staff when they are injecting the drug.
