Drug-based treatments for Alzheimer's have been disappointingly ineffective. But, there is a growing body of evidence suggesting that, coconut oil may be an effective aid in preventing and treating the disease.

Recently an article published that, a woman 88-year-old mother suffers from Alzheimer's. The woman reported that after removing her mother from a nursing home and commencing a daily topical coconut oil treatment, the 88-year-old displayed a dramatic and immediate improvement in her condition.

Coconut oil shows promise in preliminary trials. As encouraging as stories like these may be, the only way to determine the true extent of coconut oil's purported benefits is through peer reviewed clinical trials.

Unfortunately, these types of trials are usually funded by pharmaceutical companies which seek to make a profit from developing new drugs, and natural plant-based treatments are of little interest to such companies.

However, one preliminary study conducted in Spain showed positive results, suggesting that coconut oil may be quite effective in treating Alzheimer's in some types of patients, particularly among women.

The researchers reported the scores of tests measuring mental ability among subjects who were given 40 ml/day of extra virgin coconut oil. The conclusion was that treatment with coconut oil led to an improvement in cognitive status, improving especially women's, those without diabetes mellitus type II, and severe patients.

Another coconut oil study is being conducted by the University of South Florida's Health Byrd Alzheimer's Institute, with funding provided by private sources. Therapeutic benefits of coconut oil in combating the effects of Alzheimer's are related to the high levels of medium chain triglycerides (MCT) that it contains.

Coconut oil is composed of 66 percent MCT, which is converted by the liver into ketones that act as "brain fuel," restoring and repairing neurons while also improving nerve function in the brain.

It's a complex process, and one that is not yet fully understood, but the good news is completely safe and there's certainly no harm in trying it, even if the results prove to be minimal.

There is a good chance that Alzheimer's patients who are given coconut oil will see at least some improvement, and possibly even dramatic results similar to the ones described above.
