Google has just acquired conversational user interface provider Api.ai, a startup with tools for speech recognition and natural language understanding. Api.ai offers a conversational assistant app with more than 20 million users.
Api.ai software is used in wearables, chatbots, smart cars, apps, home automation kits and smart TVs. The user interfaces are both text and voice based. Chatbots using Api.ai technology are on Twitter, Facebook Messenger, Slack, Skype, Microsoft Cortana and Telegram among other platforms.
Api.ai was launched in 2014. It provides speech recognition, text recognition and natural language processing in 14 languages. Over 60,000 developers are using Api.ai to deliver conversational interfaces.
“API.AI has a proven track record for helping developers design, build and continuously improve their conversational interfaces,” Google vice president of engineering Scott Huffman wrote in a blog post.
Api.ai chief executive Ilya Gelfenbeyn wrote in a blog post that Joining Google will allow Api.ai to accelerate improvements to the platform and service our growing developer community in ways we’ve always dreamed.
