Oscar award winning actor, Leonardo DiCaprio unveiled free technology, which allows people to keep track of global fishing practices. Marine conservation campaigners hope citizens will be able to play their part of global illegal fishing with new technology.
The new technology, known as Global Fishing Watch, was officially released to the public during the Our Oceans Conference hosted by US Secretary of State John Kerry in Washington. DiCaprio gave £5.4m ($6m) to the project for monitors fishing vessels.

With the help of “Global Fishing Watch”, users can track, measure and visualize real-time and historical global fishing activity. In addition, the technology allows users to view individual vessel tracks, exclusive economic zones and marine protected areas.
According to the UN Food and Agriculture Organization, Around two thirds of global fish stocks are now over exploited or depleted. Global Fishing Watch traces the path of more than 35,000 vessels to look for illegal activity.
