According to new rules from the Food and Drug Administration (FDA)  warns parents in using of codeine drug for children below 12 is very dangerous this drug is generally found in normal Cough syrups and pain killers.

Parents while purchasing the medicines should carefully read the ingredient labels on pain and cough medicines that they don't contain codeine or another medication called tramadol before giving the medication to children, even the breast feeding woman should not use causes side effects in some infants, including excessive sleepiness, serious breathing problems and deaths and it is recommended it only for adults.

Codeine is typically used to treat mild to moderate degrees of pain and sometimes marketed in combination in pain killers such as acetaminophen or aspirin or with non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs such as ibuprofen. These combinations provide greater pain relief. You should not use codeine if you are allergic to it, or if you have an uncontrolled breathing disorder, a bowel obstruction called paralytic ileus, or frequent asthma attacks or hyperventilation. Codeine can slow or stop your breathing

The FDA said in a statement that Most of the children are suffering with different types of breathing problems and making their way even to death. As FDA has examined some reports of 24 people who have died in cause of experiencing life threatening breathing problems. Among 24 people the codeine drug side effected are the children below 12 years and decided to change the Names and required labels containing codeine drug and that it is making changes to its requirements.

Codeine-containing drugs should not be used to treat pain or cough due to any cause in kids under 12-18 years. It leads severe sleep apnea or severe lung disease, which can increase the risk of serious breathing problems. This means they break down the drugs much faster than is typical, which leads to dangerously high levels of the active drug in their bodies, he said.
