The two companies Samsung and amazon teamed up to develop a new open standard for high dynamic range video HDR 10+.

The jointly developed standard is an update to the existing HDR10 standard that uses dynamically shifting metadata that changes as needed throughout a video, rather than a static piece of metadata for each video portion.

Dynamic metadata is a particularly important addition in HDR10+ and the competing Dolby Vision spec, rectifies this by providing contrast and brightness information on a scene-by-scene or even frame-by-frame basis, allowing HDR televisions with such capabilities to adjust their picture output and deliver images that come closer to the director’s intent.

HDR10+ now marks the fifth major HDR standard vying for industry support, along with the original HDR10, Dolby Vision, HLG, and Advanced HDR.

Samsung Electronics Vice-President of the Visual Display Division, Kyoungwon Lim, said, the new standard is only available on Samsung’s 2017 QLED lineup, though 2016 models will be joining them via a firmware update at some point during the second half of the year. For now, older Samsung TVs and those using display technologies besides QLED won’t be receiving the new standard.

In terms of content, Amazon Video is set to support HDR10+ later this year, but it is the only major company signed on so far.
