The largest hydroelectric power station known as The Three Gorges Dam in the world on Yangtze River located in Hubei province, China. It could be responsible for changing rotation of earth. Scientist have discovered that filling of reservoir behind the dam shows the phenomenon of slowing down the rotation of the earth.

The water level when maximum is 574ft above sea level and 299ft above from the level of river water in reservoir and the power station expected to generate 22,500MW. Length of the reservoir is about 410 miles and width is 1.12 km in width. The total surface area of the reservoir is 1045 square kilometers. The reservoir will contain about 39.3 cu km 9.43 cubic miles of water.

The water will weigh more than 39 trillion kilograms 42 billion tons. If the Three Gorges Dam is filled to capacity at 574 above sea level, it will increase the Earth’s moment of inertia and slow its rotation increasing the length of day by 0.06 microseconds and it will also shift the pole position by two centimeters (0.8 inch). Make the Earth slightly more round in the middle and flat on the top NASA has reported.

A shift in mass that remarkable could affect the rotation of the Earth, scientists argue, in a phenomenon known as the moment of inertia the inertia of a rigid rotating body with respect to its rotation. The longer the distance of a mass to its axis of rotation, the slower it will spin. Since the $30 billion project was announced. The dam project was completed and fully functional as of July 4, 2012. Chinese officials have faced heavy scrutiny from both scientists and environmental activists like. Many believe that the dam will ultimately result in sudden disaster. Some concerns include the dam trapping pollution, spawning earthquakes and landslides, uprooting citizens. The government finally has accepted that the project was to create danger.

The 32 generators were installed and went into action at the end of July last year. The gushing water produced by the dam has enough power to generate about 22,500 megawatts of energy the estimates which is equivalent to about FIFTEEN nuclear reactors.
