Messing around with the iOS Simulator, developer Steve Troughton-Smith has stumbled upon a nifty one-handed keyboard mode hidden in the code of iOS that has apparently been there since at least iOS 8.
As the crafty coder explains, the secret feature can be activated by a simple edge-swipe. What’s particularly cool is that you can adjust the keyboard to fit either of your hands all you must do is pull up the feature from the side of your dominant hand.
The gesture pushes the keys closer to the corner, reducing their overall width as new dedicated cut, copy and paste shortcuts appear stacked on top of one another on the left hand or right hand side.
Given that the feature was added around the time of the iPhone 6 and 6 Plus release, MacRumors speculates that the feature was most likely designed to make it easier for users to type on the larger-sized 6 Plus models.
The developer who found the hidden feature in the iOS 8 code base was Steve Troughton-Smith, and he tweeted out screenshots of the one-handed keyboard, and followed up with a video showing the feature in an iOS app simulation.
He says, the only disadvantage is that you can’t use the functionality on your iPhone. Activating the one-handed keyboard would require you to jailbreak your device’s operating system and that’s not exactly ideal.
