Facebook has decided to allow more graphic posts if the respective posts are deemed newsworthy and relevant in terms of worldwide information.
Facebook is taking steps to avoid a repeat of last month's Napalm Girl controversy. The image, one of the most famous war photographs in history, depicts a naked girl fleeing a Napalm attack.
Facebook Inc announced Friday that it plans to cut down censorship of offensive posts that may violate its community standards against nudity and violence -- that is, if those posts are deemed to be in the public interest.
"In the weeks ahead, we're going to begin allowing more items that people find newsworthy, significant, or important to the public interest -- even if they might otherwise violate our standards," according to a blog post from Joel Kaplan, VP of global public policy at Facebook and Justin Osofsky, its VP in charge of media partnerships.
Just a night ago, Facebook took down a Swedish video which was meant to raise awareness to breast cancer.
Facebook has decided to upgrade its ‘Community Standard’ policies, loosening them to allow graphic content like nudity or violence if they carry historical significance or newsworthy.
The “newsworthy” status of the information pieces will be based on the public, as they will decide if an ad or video is significant, or holds important editorial or historical and cultural information.
We’re looking forward to working closely with experts, publishers, journalists, photographers, law enforcement officials and safety advocates about how to do better when it comes to the kinds of items we allow. And we’re grateful for the counsel of so many people who are helping us try to get this right”, Facebook said in a blog post.
