Google Fiber, which launched a few years ago with the promise of bringing 1Gbps Internet access to many cities across the US, has decided to pause its once ambitious expansion plans.

Google Fiber also recently purchased a wireless ISP called Webpass, which offers high-speed wireless Internet in six metro areas and seems set on expanding wireless service going forward

Google today announced that while it will continue to operate the Internet and TV service in the cities that already have it, or are in the middle of construction, it will “pause our operations and offices” in the remaining cities that were being considered for the service.

Google Fiber chief Craig Barratt will step down from his post and remain only as an adviser.

Barratt wrote:

These changes to our business and technology will have some immediate implications. Some of our efforts will remain unchanged, but others will be impacted. In terms of our existing footprint, in the cities where we've launched or are under construction, our work will continue. For most of our 'potential Fiber cities'—those where we've been in exploratory discussions—we're going to pause our operations and offices while we refine our approaches... In this handful of cities that are still in an exploratory stage, and in certain related areas of our supporting operations, we’ll be reducing our employee base.

According to Ars Technica, The 10 areas that Google Fiber listed as "potential" Fiber cities are subject to the "pause."

  • Chicago, Illinois
  • Dallas, Texas
  • Jacksonville, Florida
  • Los Angeles, California
  • Oklahoma City, Oklahoma
  • Phoenix, Arizona
  • Portland, Oregon
  • San Diego, California
  • San Jose, California
  • Tampa, Florida

This decision will not affect customers in the eight metro areas where Fiber is already installed, only those where the company was considering expanding into.
