Amazon’s AWS cloud computing service today announced launched a region in Ohio.  With this launch, AWS now provides 38 Availability Zones across 14 technology infrastructure regions globally.

The new Ohio Region is currently available for multiple services, including Amazon Elastic Compute Cloud (Amazon EC2), Amazon Simple Storage Service (Amazon S3), and Amazon Relational Database Service (Amazon RDS).

The US East (Ohio) Region consists of three separate Availability Zones at launch.  The new AWS US East (Ohio) Region, in conjunction with the US East (Northern Virginia), US West (Oregon), and US West (N. California) Regions gives them flexibility to architect across multiple AWS Regions within the United States.

Amazon’s CTO Werner Vogels noted in today’s announcement that this means AWS now runs two regions that mainly serve the U.S. East Coast

“We strive to place customer feedback first in our considerations for where to open new regions. The Ohio Region is no different. Now customers who have been requesting a second US East region have more infrastructure options for running workloads, storing files, running analytics, and managing databases.” Amazon’s CTO Werner Vogels wrote in a blog post.
