Facebook has announced a "Lite" version of its Android Messenger app. The new Messenger lite app is designed for older phones with less memory and less powerful processors.
Messenger Lite app gives the ability to send text, photos, and links to anyone using Facebook Messenger when they have “slower than average internet speeds and a prevalence of basic Android smartphones.”
David Marcus, head of messaging products at Facebook Inc., said in an interview that Messenger’s goal is to be a “product for everyone, not only people who can afford a higher-end device and more expensive data plan.”
There is already a "Facebook Lite" available for people whose phones are too old or simple to run the full-fledged Facebook. With a file size of under 10MB, Facebook believes Messenger Lite will be fast to install and start-up.
Messenger Lite offers the same core functions as Messenger, enabling users to send and receive texts, photos, and links, and to receive stickers. The app is fast and easy to download, with a size of under 10MB.
More than 1 billion people around the world use Messenger every month from a range of mobile devices on networks of various speeds and reliability. With Messenger Lite, more people can stay in contact, regardless of network conditions or storage limitations on their Android devices. Facebook said in a blog post.
Messenger Lite will initially launch in Kenya, Malaysia, Sri Lanka, Tunisia, and Venezuela, but will hit other regions at a later, unspecified date. The company did not say when it would be available in other countries or whether it is also coming to Apple devices
