Google has released a new open-source font called Noto, which supports 800 languages and covers 110 writing systems.

Google and Monotype have launched Noto, an open-source typeface family that encompasses every written language in the world, living and dead.

Google, in partnership with font specialist Monotype, has taken the wraps off the Noto Project. Noto, one of the most expansive typographic families ever made, supports 800 languages, 100 scripts in up to eight different weights, innumerable special characters, and absolutely no tofu.

The name Noto comes from the phrase ‘No more tofu’, which refers to ridding the Web of blank characters (‘⯐’ , a.k.a. tofu), which are displayed when the necessary symbol from a certain language isn’t available on the user’s system. Noto offers an elegant, unified look across languages and is free to use for any sort of project.

"One of the goals of the project was to support every language and every character, so one of the things we wanted to do was make sure there's no tofu for all our users," said Bob Jung, an director of internationalization at Google.
