Cancer Research recently published a study indicating an increase in liver cancer risk for people having high body mass index and type 2 diabetes. The disease indicates the start of cancer from liver itself instead travelling there from any other organ or tissue. It is relatively uncommon but quite serious.
As per new estimates from American Cancer Society, 39,230 new cases of liver cancer and 27,170 deaths from the disease are being expected in year 2016 in America itself.
Generally disease is diagnosed quite late as symptoms don’t show up in early stages of the disease. Even if it is diagnosed earlier before it starts affecting other body organs, just 30.5% survival of 5 years life span is expected.
Type 2 diabetes is on a spur globally and it is in direct relation with obesity and this may further lead to liver cancer as all three relate to metabolic dysfunction.
A team of researchers from the National Cancer Institute decided to investigate whether there could be links between these three obesity-related parameters and the rise in liver cancer. After collating 1.57 million participants data it was found that type 2 diabetes occurred in 6.5 percent of study participants and out of that 2,162 developed liver cancer. Further it was discovered that every 5 centimeter increase in waistline increased this risk by 8%.
BMI, waist circumference, and type 2 diabetes – all three proved to be culprit for increasing the risk of developing liver cancer.
