Western Digital(WD) enters the SSD market with Blue and Green drives. WD has produced Blue and Green branded SATA SSDs, based on SanDisk technology. Green SSDs will be available later this quarter while Blue drives are available now.
Blue and Green SanDisk will be available in 2.5” 7mm and M.2 2280 form factors. The Green brand is for secondary storage, being reliable, cool and eco-friendly whilst Blue products are built for PC primary storage use.
- Blue SSDs do random read/writes at up to 100,000/80,000IOPS
- Green SSDs do random read/writes at up to 37,000/68,000 IOPS
- Blue SSDs do sequential read/writes at up to 545/525MB/sec
- Green SSDs do sequential read/writes at up to 540/465MB/sec
“There is significant demand among our core WD resellers and consumers for a broad set of flash-based storage options,” says Eyal Bek, senior director, Devices Business Unit, Western Digital.
WD Blue SSD is available now at 250GB, 500GB and 1TB capacity with ‘read and write’ speeds of 545MB/s and 525MB/s respectively.
The WD Blue SSDs start at $80 for the 250GB model and top out at $300 for the 1TB model.Both Blue and Green SSDs use the 6Gbit/s SATA interface.
WD Green SSD is Available in 120GB and 240GB capacities, and in both 2.5-inch/7mm case or M.2 2280 form factors, WD Green SSDs deliver an ultra-low power-draw, enabling PC users to work longer between battery charges. It will be available later this quarter.
Blue and Green SSDs have a three-year limited warranty and come with WD's Dashboard drive monitoring software.
