Researchers in the Department of Cardiology at Cairo University have conducted a study on Coronary heart disease (CHD).  They started the investigation and accumulated some evidences that hair graying as a prediction of aging is associated with risk of coronary artery disease (CAD) irrespective of their age laps.

Coronary artery is a disease in which some amounts of fat substance called plaque which settles down on the walls of artery and blocking the flow of oxygenated blood to heart.  And formation of plaque occurs over many years and the paths in artery becomes narrow the condition is called atherosclerosis. If the flow of oxygen-rich blood to your heart muscle is reduced or blocked causes Angina. Angina is chest pain or discomfort that occurs if an area of your heart muscle doesn't get enough oxygen-rich blood. Angina may feel like pressure or squeezing in your chest. The pain also can occur in your shoulders, arms, neck, jaw, or back. Angina pain may even feel like indigestion or can cause heart attacks.

In the United States, coronary heart disease (CHD) is a leading cause of death for both men and women. Each year, about 370,000 Americans die from coronary heart disease. The coronary heart diseases have been classified into different types.

Atherosclerosis

Coronary artery disease

Hardening of the arteries

Heart disease

Ischemic heart disease

Narrowing of the arteries

“Ageing is an unavoidable coronary risk factor and is associated with dermatological signs that could signal increased risk," said study corresponding author Dr. Irini Samuel, a researcher in the Department of Cardiology at Cairo University, Egypt.

Thyroid disorders, anemia and vitiligo have also been linked to premature graying, and it's even been associated with an increased risk of coronary artery disease (CAD) in young smokers. The researchers examined the data from 545 adult men who underwent multi-slice computed tomography (CT) coronary angiography for suspected CAD. They found that a high hair whitening score grade 3 or more, predominately white hair was associated with increased risk of CAD independent of chronological age and established cardiovascular risk factors. Patients with CAD had a higher hair whitening score and higher coronary artery calcification. Calcification is the accumulation of calcium salts in a body tissue and those without CAD.

The participants were divided into subgroups according to the presence or absence of CAD, and the amount of gray/white hair. The amount of gray hair was graded using a 1-5 scale1 being pure black hair to 5 being pure white hair. Two independent observers graded each patient’s hair whitening score. Data was also collected on traditional cardiovascular risk factors such as diabetes, smoking and if any family members had coronary artery disease. The amount of gray hair was graded using the hair whitening score: 1 pure black hair, 2 black more than white, 3 black equals white, 4 white more than black, and 5 pure white.

Using CT coronary angiography, researchers have proved that gray hair has been linked to an increased risk of heart disease in men. The findings were presented at Euro Prevent 2017.
