Following Apple, Microsoft has begun testing out tabs in Windows apps such as File Explorer.

According to a new report, Microsoft’s new feature Tabbed Shell will work in any Windows app, citing unnamed sources. According to windows central blog posted its own mockups for the File Explorer and Word to show how the feature might work.

The new project is supposed to make tabs an essential part of the operating system, mostly in an effort to offer more consistency across Windows 10.

File Explorer will definitely be one of the apps getting tab support, but with Tabbed Shell, tabs will become available in any window running on your Windows 10 system, without any change made by the developer.

According to reports, Microsoft may provide an API for developers looking to improve the tab experience in their apps, and even create custom experiences when opening new tabs.

However, it’s still not clear if this tab support would replace the ability to open multiple instances of an app in multiple windows or just complement it. Though this would perfectly make sense and align with what users expect to get in future updates.
